Low Income Taxpayer Clinic

Legal Aid of Western Missouri
Friday, April 13, 2007

Legal Aid of Western Missouri (LAWMO) receives partial funding from the IRS to implement a Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC), which provides tax education and outreach to taxpayers who are limited English proficient or speak English as a second language.

The clinic focuses on the rights and responsibilities of taxpayers, with an emphasis on:

  • Who must file federal taxes
  • When, where, and how to file federal taxes
  • Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers
  • The Earned Income Tax Credit

Taxpayers in need of legal representation are referred to a pro bono panel of attorneys from LAWMO's Volunteer Attorney Project (VAP).

The LITC does not do tax preparation, but refers people who need assistance to Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites and the Taxpayer Assistance Centers at the local IRS offices.
