Legal Aid Society (LAS) offers a loan repayment assistance program (LRAP) to help employees repay educational debt that accrued while attending law, paralegal, or legal secretary school. Participating attorneys may receive up to $3000 annually in loan assistance. Participating paralegals and legal secretaries may receive up to $2000 annually in loan assistance. Part-time employees are eligible to receive a pro rated amount. Assistance is considered income for tax purposes.
To receive the full benefits of LAS' LRAP, employees must remain with LAS for five years. If an employee leaves in the first year, the employee is required to repay all assistance paid by LAS. If an employee leaves during the second year, the employee is required to repay 80% of the assistance paid by LAS. If an employee leaves during the third year, the employee is required to repay 60% of the assistance paid by LAS. If an employee leaves during the fourth year, the employee is required to repay 40% of the assistance paid by LAS. If an employee leaves during the fifth year, the employee is required to repay 20% of the assistance paid by LAS.
