Appalachian Research and Defense Fund of Kentucky (APPALRED) implemented a loan repayment assistance program (LRAP) to help full-time staff attorneys repay outstanding educational loans. Upon being hired, attorneys are required to provide APPALRED with documentation of their outstanding debt. Participating attorneys are eligible to receive 10% of the annual loan obligation up to $3,500 per year. Payment amounts will be recomputed every three years. Every six months, participants are required to provide APPALRED with documentation that the assistance paid by APPALRED has been used towards student loans. To receive the full benefits of this LRAP, participants must remain with APPALRED for at least two years. In the event that an employee leaves prior to the two year mark, the attorney will be required to repay a portion of the assistance as detailed in the guidelines.
