Manual for Legal Services and Pro Bono Mediation Programs

ABA Section of Dispute Resolution - 040053

Abstract Number: 040053

June 2004

The ABA Section of Dispute Resolution published a Manual for Legal Services and Pro Bono Mediation Programs to provide guidance to legal services organizations on how to establish or improve an existing mediation program. This manual is intended for Executive Directors, Board of Directors, and staff who work on an existing mediation programs. The manual outlines the potential benefits of launching a mediation program as well as how programs can build support, fund, and staff a mediation program. While offering valuable guidance, the manual also integrates programmatic experience about the lessons learned in Arizona when Community Legal Services established an alternative dispute resolution program in 2002 and presents this advice as suggestions distributed throughout the manual. The manual's appendix includes a number of useful documents such as a sample confidentiality agreement, evaluation form, mediation agreement, mediation confirmation letter, mediation ground rules, and more. This manual was funded by the JAMS Foundation. Access the full manual through the link below as a PDF document on the ABA's website.
