New Advocate Training Protocol
Ohio State Legal Services - 080098
Abstract Number: 080098
November 2008
Ohio State Legal Services (OSLSA) created a New Advocate Training Protocol that establishes a process that takes every new advocate starting at OSLSA through a series of training sessions to advance their skills and prepare them adequately for the legal aid field.
The program schedules periodic new advocate workshops during the year to provide skills trainings and roundtable discussions on issues of significance to developing attorneys.
The managing attorney and the new advocate meet regularly on an informal basis and a few times during year in formal conferences to evaluate the training process. This evaluation process includes:
1. Assessment by the managing attorney and the new advocate of the advocate's developmental progress since the last conference, including review of specific goals previously established, general development, progress in satisfying the training protocol, etc.;
2. Discussion of training interactions between the managing attorney and the new advocate since the last conference, including identification of successful training strategies, problem areas, ideas for enhanced interaction or performance, etc.; and
3. Identification and designation of developmental goals for the next period, including implementation of any suggestions or solutions generated by discussion of the first two items.
This training protocol also includes checklists that are a non-comprehensive listing of significant lawyering tasks that new advocates work through.
