The Alabama Tenants Handbook

Legal Services Alabama, Alabama Appleseed and Arise Citizen's Policy Project - 080057

Abstract Number: 080057

July 2008

Legal Services Alabama (LSA), Alabama Appleseed and Arise Citizen's Policy Project developed the Alabama Tenants Handbook.  The Handbook was created to help renters understand and exercise their rights and responsibilities under the law.  To reach and attract the audience, the Handbook is written in a very simple manner with entertaining graphics and cartoons to match different sections.  Even though the Handbook references Alabama law, the structure and some of the sections are applicable to those outside of Alabama who want to develop a similar handbook.

The Handbook includes the following sections:

1. Introduction
2. Before you move in…
• Check the place out
• What if you find a problem
• Check the Lease
3. While you live there…
• You have the right to a livable dwelling
• You have the responsibility to be a good tenant
• What to do when something needs fixing
4. When it's time to get out…
•    What the law says about moving
•    What the law says about eviction
5. Protecting your rights…
•  What the law says about monetary damage
• What federal law says about fair housing
6. Where to get legal help
7. Glossary
