Abstract Number: 040015
March 2004
Community Voice Mail (CVM) is a national nonprofit organization that empowers people in crisis and transition by providing them with the tangible tool they need to succeed: a consistent telephone number. Working with social service agencies around the country, CVM distributes free, personalized voice mail numbers, directly linking individuals to jobs, housing, and stability.
Partnering Expands Our Impact CVM numbers are distributed through existing social services - we don't reinvent the wheel. Instead, trained case workers distribute our numbers as early as possible, striving to avert a crisis as well as meet urgent needs. Case workers also utilize CVM to stay in consistent contact with clients, doubling the impact of our service.
CVM serves 34 communities throughout the United States and plans to expand to 65 communities by the end of 2007, with an emphasis on the top 50 U.S. Cities by population.
CVM has found that a reliable, local message number is critical for people who are seeking work, housing and/or fleeing domestic violence. Community Voice Mail has also become an important tool for social workers, case managers and legal service providers - allowing them to stay connected and deliver services to clients who would otherwise be hard to reach.
Legal services programs interested in providing free voice mail to their clients as a supportive service may partner with an existing CVM site or work to bring CVM services to their community. (www.cvm.org)
